14,000 VHS Tapes, A New Music Series, & Much More - May 30th
Just gonna let today's newsletter speak for itself.
Happy Friday Raleigh! It’s another rainy day but we have a lot going on again this weekend. Just one quick note today:

• Oak City Music has announced a new concert series! The Centennial Sound Bites aims to fill the Lunch Break with music and food on Campus every Wednesday from 12-1PM. The first event starts June 4 and will run through the end of July — more info here.
• The Portal HQ, a creative hub over near Meredith College, is hosting the grand opening of Starborn Studious a brand new production recording studio this Sunday — see more about the HQ and check out their events below:
• Raleigh Iron Works has their Pride Kickoff event Sunday starting at 11AM. The event is spotlighting Urban Pothos, Beatniks, and The Flourish Market and will feature art, music, resources, and more — click for details.
• The 41st Annual Raleigh Greek Festival is this weekend, starting today at 5PM through Sunday at 6PM. Check out traditional dances, authentic food, & more — link here.
• Joe Pickett (The Onion) and Nick Prueher (Late Show) have the Found Footage Fest tomorrow at 8PM over at the Rialto Theatre showcasing the best VHS tapes they have found since 2004. Their collection is over 14,000 at this point and this show will tell you all about this wild project — more here and below:

• Watts & Ward has their 8th anniversary part tonight! They will have throwback vibes and cocktails. A great spot for anyone who wants a popular speakeasy vibe — more here.
• Left Hook is giving away free City of Raleigh mugs! Be the first to pick up a storm drain marker, mark a local drain, take a selfie with it and return — more on the event here.
• Opening in the old Clouds Brewing location downtown, La Mala has opened their second location outside of Durham. They feature street food inspired Mexican food and cocktails — see the new location below:

• Just another reminder, the Run for Love 5K is tomorrow if you plan on running around Dix Park or helping donate to a good cause — details here.
• Midnight Meridian Car Club and Chapel of Bones is throwing a Goths & Gasoline event tomorrow night starting at 7PM, bring your killer dark vibes if you dare — details here.
• The exact opposite of the above (loud cars and music) but if you’re looking for a Sensory Friendly family event this weekend, check out Swing into Spring (previously moved from April to May), details below:

• Storyliving by Disney, the real estate section of their company, has started clearing the road for their Asteria community over in Pittsboro. The build plans to have 4,000 units and sales will being in 2027 — more here (possible paywall).
• Velvet Taco, a Texas based taco joint, is set to open soon in the old “World of Beer” location in the North Hills District — stay tuned on their site for an opening date (I ate at one of these in Austin and it was fantastic, so this is exciting personally for me).
• The Wake County Animal Shelter is looking for help as they are almost at capacity. As of now they have over 400 animals in their care. If you or someone you know could use a new friend consider adopting! Fees are waived through June 8th — website here.

Local sports teams scores and updates.
• Hurricanes: Well, the season ends here folks. After losing to the Panthers Wednesday night, the Hurricanes exit the playoffs in the 3rd Round. For what was meant to be a year we weren’t supposed to make the playoffs being 3rd/4th overall ain’t too shabby.
We’ll get em next year. Go Canes!
• NCSU: NCSU Baseball takes on Stetson in the Auburn Regional before the NCAA Tournament begins, they play in Alabama tonight at 7PM — coverage here.
• The Soccer Tournament: The Men’s and Women’s 7v7 Soccer Tournament at Wake Med Soccer Park starts June 4th and runs through the following Monday for the $1 Million Championship games — see tickets and the full schedule here.
• NC FC: Just a reminder, the FC play away tomorrow at Richmond at 7PM.
• NC Courage: The Courage don’t play again until the 8th, we’ll keep you posted.
The community calendar will have the remaining full schedule of the FC & Courage this weekend, so check that out if you haven’t already — newsletter members or anyone with 3 referrals can access it!
• Carolina Flyers: I mentioned them a while back but did you know we (Durham) have a local ultimate team? Check out their schedule below, next home game June 7th, with a few watch parties and events locally until then.

Raleigh is cool but so are our neighbors.
• BBQ & Bubbly, an event for expert pairings of sparkling wine mixed with southern BBQ, takes place in Fenton (Cary) tomorrow at 12PM, check out the full details here.
• Durham County Library has a Graphic Book Club that meets (for now) on zoom each month! They just had their May event but get started on their June one today — Check out the 700+ member meetup group here if that sounds up your alley.

• Heading out to Saxapahaw for the weekend? Bynum General Store, in Pittsboro nearby, has started back up their Summer Concert Series “Bynum Front Porch”. Turn it into a full weekend with music starting tonight at 7 — details here.
• The North Carolina Symphony plays the music of John Williams (Star Wars, Harry Potter, etc.) tonight at 8PM over at Koka Booth, tickets start at $22 — more here.
