Better Late Than Never! - May 5th

Cinco de Mayo events, new spots & old, plus lots of wins for local sports in today's edition.

Happy Monday Raleigh!

My regular readers probably noticed that I am a few hours late with the email today. Unfortunately, I had a personal emergency that took away my weekend into the early Monday morning hours, so it’s a bit delayed.

But back to regular schedule on Wednesday, so let’s hop into the events for today!

If you know, you know.

• Been in Raleigh since Kmart on Western was open? Well, CityPlat has taken over the location and is turning it into a district similar to the North Hills concept, just on a smaller scale. The new location will have fitness, sports & rec, and entertainment, as well as access to public transit — see RaleighMag’s here for more on the build.

• Check out Mala Pata’s final pop-up event before their (next week)grand opening, today at 6PM for Cinco de Mayo. The event will take place at their neighbor, Natural Science Bar — click here if interested.

• Looking for some other spots? RaleighIsGrowing already did I great write up on some places to visit for Cinco de Mayo — so check that out here if interested.

• The Ruby Deluxe is closing after 10 years. The community has mixed feelings on the matter, citing sadness at loss for an inclusive space while also calling for action on issues with management at the location — their last night will be this Saturday, more here.

• If you have our events calendar (you may have already seen this) but Live After 5 is back for the season, with the first show kicking off on May 21st!

• The NC Arts Council shared their strategic plan through 2029, the program aims to strengthen Grassroots Arts programs, increase traditional arts support for students, and grow the council and internal capacity as a whole — click to read the full plan.

• Got Mulch? Raleigh Gov is giving away FREE Mulch for your garden through May 10th, check out how to pick some up at the link here.

• While in the garden mood, the Raleigh Rose Garden is also in bloom! It is located behind the Raleigh Little Theatre — see the blooms below:

• Just a reminder, NCSU graduation was this past weekend, but both UNC and Duke hold theirs this weekend, so be mindful in each area for traffic and plans if you’re out.

• Because I know you wanted more gardens, Juniper Level is also open THIS weekend for FREE visits, check out below to learn more and to view hours.

• SAS has appointed 25 year veteran, Gavin Day, to COO as the company moves to prepare for a future IPO, which has not gotten a set time frame — more here.

• The 30 story tower located near the Publix downtown is still being discussed, most of the people against the building are long term homeowners near downtown, while the arguments for, support more urban density and increased local business traffic.

• May 7th (Wednesday) is the first date where the required REAL ID will be needed for domestic travel, if you do not have it a passport will be needed in addition.

Each season The Raleighwood Inbox takes on a new design style! If you look at the one we have now for Spring, you will see the Native NC Plants & Flowers in the background of the headers (for example below with Stage & Sound).

For summer, what would you like to see instead? I have a few ideas myself but I wanted to get community input on the direction of the newsletter.

Thoughts? Simply reply to this email with your idea and your theme may be the next one we use!

The ramblings of your author, apologies in advance.

Apologies for the delay again folks!

I always write these ahead of time but stuff happens. My backup goal is to get these out before 5PM in the case of an emergency (which this weekend was), as most of the things listed here don’t start until after work hours anyway.

Either way, we got through it. See you Wednesday!
